2008 - BEST CHILDREN'S STORE - Boulder County Gold
Grandrabbit’s has been around for 31 years. That’s enough time for kids who ran amok in the shop to now bring their own little ones in to find treasures of their own. Supervisor Tammi Eyestone believes the secret behind their success is owner Lynne Milot’s personal touch. “The toys, books and games that she chooses are the quality ones that she either gave her kids when they were younger or she’s giving to her grandsons now. She likes finding things that are educational and fun, but not trendy. She’s very picky about what comes in here, very conscious about what she’s going to provide for the kids.” In a way, Milot’s playing grandma to every child that walks into the store. That kind of compassion and forethought will send today’s children back to Grandrabbit’s when they become parent

This year marks Grandrabbits' 25th anniversary. And last Christmas was the store's best ever, proof, says owner Lynne Milot, that this community values families and children above all else. As does Milot, a former Montessori teacher, who started the store for two reasons: To be a source of high quality toys and to be an employer that respects single mothers' commitments, first and foremost, to their children. As time has passed, the children of her early employees have grown up and come in to fill out job applications. "Yet, I haven't gotten any older," says Milot with a smile. At least not in her approach to creating a store filled with fun stuff and opportunities for play. A Grandrabbits fixture is the area up front with affordable treasures - parachute men, kazoos, marbles - all displayed at kid level. The goal is to provide an inventory of items that kids can purchase with their own allowance - teaching the thrill of financial self-sufficiency at a young age. "It heartens me to watch parents and children in Grandrabbits," says Milot. "Something about a toy store," she says, "brings out the best in all of us."Grandrabbit's Toy Shoppe has been awarded The Best Children's Store for over 20 years by the Boulder Daily Camera.

Guns, mass-slaughter electronic games, Barbie dolls—looking at the toys most stores sell to kids could give you the material for a master's thesis on gender roles or violence in society. Fortunately, Boulder County residents have more than a few options besides the typical Junk-Is-Us toy store. Reader and staff pick Grandrabbit's Toy Shoppe has arts and crafts, dolls, magic tricks, science kits and infant and toddler toys that will entertain and educate. If that isn't enough to put a smile on your face, then the friendly staff will.
Grandrabbit’s Toy Shoppe has been instilling wonder, dispensing delight and making learning fun for the children of Boulder County since 1977. The store recently moved into an expanded location – a testament to its continued success – and customers couldn’t be happier.
“The best compliments we’ve been getting this year have been about how bright and open and easy it is to shop in our new space,” asserts bookkeeper Kathi Patrick. Today’s hottest toy must-haves, such as Cranium and Webkinz, mingle happily with classic favorites, like Lincoln Logs and modeling clay.
There’s something for every age level, price range and occasion. And you can be sure that every product was selected based on the store’s original philosophy: to provide high quality, aesthetically pleasing playthings that contribute to a child’s learning and development.
