Shifting Stones: A Fun Game Or An Underdone Experience? |
By: Reily McGee
We recently got Shifting Stones into Grandrabbits and I was curious. I had never heard of this game so I wanted to give it a try. What I found was Shifting Stones is a pattern making game reminiscent of games like Rush Hour and Azul. But with a twist, you can only move tiles by discarding pattern cards. Game SummaryGenre - Strategy Playtime - 15-25 mins Number of Players - 1-5 Player Age - 8+ Complexity - Easy
A Game of Puzzling StrategyIn Shifting Stones, the goal is to score as many points as possible. In order to do that, players must think tactically in which pattern cards are possible for them to complete. Rearranging the tiles costs one pattern card to do. That makes the strategy more focused on figuring out which patterns will be easiest for you to make rather than always going for the one with the most points.
Gamewright has made excellent strides in family and casual board games for over thirty years now. Shifting Stones is no exception to this. With a fairly quick set-up, easy to understand rules, and a fun concept, this game has won its place as a good game to play every once in a while.
I say every once and a while because, after playing a few rounds, the game begins to feel repetitive. Whilst your objectives change each time, the core gameplay is not super exciting but still captivating for younger players. For casual game players though, this will be a nice game to pull out at game nights.
